A stabilizer is rated in kVA, and the working rule in India is watts = kVA × 800. That is the first number to get right: a single 1.5-ton air conditioner needs about 4–5 kVA, a whole 3BHK home on the mainline needs about 10 kVA, and a shop or clinic sits at 15 kVA and up.
The second number is the input voltage range — a stabilizer can only correct what it can catch. If your supply falls to 90V in summer, a unit that starts correcting at 130V simply cuts out and protects nothing.

Where a band shows a wide price spread, it is because the same kVA is available as a relay unit and as a servo unit — see below.
A relay stabilizer switches between fixed transformer taps. Correction is instant, the electronics are simple, and the output lands inside a safe band rather than on an exact figure. For a fridge, TV, washing machine or air conditioner that is completely sufficient, and it is what most Indian homes should buy.
A servo stabilizer drives a motorised variac that continuously hunts for 230V, holding output to roughly ±1%. Correction is smooth rather than stepped, which matters for CNC machines, medical and laboratory equipment, lifts and printing presses. Paying servo money to protect a domestic fridge is money wasted.
A mainline stabilizer sits at the distribution board and protects every socket in the house from one box. A point-of-use unit protects one appliance. If you already own three or four separate stabilizers, a single mainline unit usually costs less in total and means nothing gets forgotten.
Buy for the worst voltage you actually see, not the average.
Air-cooled units are lighter and correct for domestic and light commercial duty. Oil-cooled units immerse the transformer, run far cooler under sustained full load and last longer where the stabilizer works hard all day.

An air conditioner's compressor must not restart immediately after a power cut — the refrigerant pressure has not equalised, and restarting into it is what kills compressors. Every MuscleGrid AC and mainline stabilizer holds the output off for a few minutes after supply returns. If you are buying a stabilizer to protect an air conditioner, this feature matters more than the badge on the front.
Use watts = kVA × 800. One 1.5-ton air conditioner draws about 1,200–1,600 W, so 4–5 kVA. A whole 2BHK home is roughly 5–8 kVA, and a 3–4BHK home with two ACs and a pump is 10 kVA on the mainline. Round up one size rather than down.

Inverter ACs tolerate a wider voltage range than older fixed-speed units, but they are not immune — the electronics fail on sustained low voltage and on spikes, and that repair is not cheap. If your supply is unstable, a stabilizer is still the cheaper side of the equation.
A relay stabilizer clicks each time it changes tap, which is normal. Constant clicking means the supply is hunting around a switching threshold, or the unit is undersized for the load. A loud hum usually means an overloaded or loosely mounted transformer — our toroidal cores are used precisely because they hum far less.
